Custom Parts & Accessories Coverage for Trucks: What's Included and What's Not

Standard auto insurance includes a token amount for custom parts and equipment — typically $1,000 to $1,500. For a truck with a $7,000 lift kit and $4,000 wheel and tire package, that cap is essentially worthless.

Custom parts and accessories coverage is the specialty endorsement that fixes this problem.

What Standard Policies Actually Cover

Most personal auto policies define "custom parts or equipment" as non-manufacturer items permanently installed in or on the vehicle. They're covered, but only up to the stated cap — often $1,000.

Some carriers offer the option to increase this cap to $5,000 or $10,000. That helps for lighter builds, but for a truck with significant modification investment, it still falls short.

What Custom Parts Coverage Covers

A properly written custom parts rider covers the actual documented value of your aftermarket equipment:

Suspension and lift components:

  • Lift kit hardware — springs, shocks, control arms, track bars
  • Suspension lift brackets and spacers
  • Leveling kits and leveling spacers
  • Body lifts and associated components

Wheels and tires:

  • Aftermarket wheels at their replacement cost
  • Oversized tires beyond stock size
  • Beadlock wheels and associated hardware

Exterior modifications:

  • Front and rear bumpers
  • Rock sliders and running boards
  • Skid plates and underbody protection
  • Bed covers, toolboxes, and bed accessories
  • Light bars, pod lights, and exterior lighting
  • Winches and fairleads

In-cab additions:

  • Aftermarket audio and infotainment systems
  • Communication and navigation equipment
  • Safety and monitoring systems

What Custom Parts Coverage Doesn't Cover

General wear and tear: Insurance covers sudden losses, not gradual wear. Worn suspension components from hard use aren't covered.

Performance modifications not permanently installed: Removable aftermarket parts (like bolt-on intakes you regularly take off) may not qualify as "permanently installed" equipment.

Mods made by dealer without documentation: Factory-order dealer modifications are sometimes excluded from aftermarket riders. Get documentation that specifies the components.

Illegal modifications: Parts that make your vehicle non-compliant with state regulations may be excluded.

How to Document Your Modifications

Proper documentation is what makes custom parts coverage work at claim time. When you apply for coverage:

  1. List every significant modification with description and approximate replacement cost
  2. Provide receipts where available — these establish original cost
  3. Photograph the current condition — photos at policy inception prevent depreciation disputes
  4. Update documentation when you add new mods — coverage only extends to listed components

The list becomes your modification schedule in the policy. When you file a claim for a stolen truck or a total loss from an accident, the adjuster uses that schedule — not their own guess at what aftermarket parts cost.

How Much Custom Parts Coverage Do You Need?

Add up the replacement cost of every aftermarket component on your truck. Be realistic about current prices — replacement costs for quality lift kits and specialty wheels have increased significantly in recent years.

A rough breakdown for a moderately built truck:

  • Quality lift kit: $3,000–$8,000
  • Aftermarket wheels (set of 4): $1,500–$4,000
  • Oversized tires (set of 5 with spare): $1,200–$2,500
  • Aftermarket bumpers (front and rear): $1,500–$4,000
  • Other accessories: $500–$3,000

Total: $7,700–$21,500 in modifications — far beyond any standard policy cap.
